How do people (who are not rich) travel for months or years at a time?

I always hear stories of these people who spent a year or two abroad, or 6 months in Europe, Asia, Russia, etc. etc. etc.
How do people (you, or people you know) manage to spend so long traveling? Where do they get the money from, how do they put everything on hold, how do they organize all the travel visa? how do they get into that state of mind? I must know how do they do it?!!
I want to travel the world, obviously not in luxury, but i can barely afford to live in one place.. let alone many different places. (i live in NYC.. and i need to get the hell out a here!)
Please share your thoughts or ideas or suggestions with me. Especially if you’ve done something like this before.

ok im from pakistan… y rnt pakistani girls attracted to me? whenever i travel to west… people tell me that im good looking and girls do stare at me… but local gals dont find me that attractive… they like guys who r soft and unmanly? y?
